IS THE STOVE ON – OVER PHAWHOPE BOTHY MICROADVENTURE

The echo chamber of our group chat had tricked us again. With the woes of our Gameshope miss-adventure now in the past the idea of getting out for the first bothy adventure of 2019 had got us excited. Once the naysayers left the conversation it was all carefree positivity with little consideration that the weather… Continue reading IS THE STOVE ON – OVER PHAWHOPE BOTHY MICROADVENTURE

RAPHA FESTIVE 500 SUPER LOOPER 2018

With concerns of Christmas commitments and keen to crush miles, Stu and I came up with the Super Looper idea. We challenged ourselves to ride as far as possible on Christmas eve, racking up as many kilometres as possible freeing up the rest of the merry holiday to enjoy ourselves and hopefully see our names near the top of the Strava leaderboard...

TYPE 2 IS COMING – GAMESHOPE BOTHY MICROADVENTURE

It was already dark by the time we gathered in Bolerno post work. Heeding the weather report everyone had donned various limb warmers, jackets and gloves to close any gaps that the already chilling air could reach. We discussed the less than positive forecast for the evening and how our planned accommodation of Gameshope Bothy lacked a stove or a fire to warm us through the night. Moral was further weakened when I informed the group of the mandatory river crossing to reach the bothy. Once we had established that nobody was actually that enthusiastic about this bikepacking trip we set off...

HIGHLAND TRAIL 550 DAY 6

I kept looking back down the road thinking about the 150 miles left of the route. The pain of each pedal stroke was a clear message that turning back and soldering on would just be an exercise in hardship and a potentially risk of long term damage...

HIGHLAND TRAIL 550 DAY 4

I didn't have a great nights sleep, my mat had developed a hole and was struggling to stay inflated for longer than 3 hours at a time. The sun had returned and brought a good breeze so any damp clothing from the day before was hung out to dry before being re-worn or packed away...

HIGHLAND TRAIL 550 DAY 3

There are many difficult areas on the Highland Trail but when you read up on the route the Northern Loop is always spoken about with a strong level of respect. This is one of the most remote areas of the trail and there are very few bail out options. Your either going forwards or backwards...

HIGHLAND TRAIL 550 PROLOGUE

I am a worrier when it comes to preparing for trips. I am also a procrastinator and these traits usually result in everything being a bit of a whirlwind come the weeks before any trip. I stress about my bike setup, about clothing, about spares, about tyres, about weather, about food and even about empty bag space...

HIGHLAND TRAIL 550 PREP – BACKDOOR TO GLENTRESS

Back in yester-summer of 2017 Rich and myself rode to Glentress and back when I was testing the feasability of off road fixed on the Steamroller in preparation for Grinduro. Since then I have been super keen to repeat this ride on a more robust bike so that increased rowdiness could be factored in. As Stu was yet to ride his Highland Trail 550 bike we decided to get out and put his sparkly single speed through its paces...

THE DIRTY REIVER 2018

Keilder Forest is one of these areas, landrover tracks and forest roads wiggle all over this remote area giving keen pedalers hundreds of options for exploring. This makes it a perfect location to hold the Dirty Reiver, a 200km (and 130km) gravel grinding event...
